Paper lantern
A traditional Japanese illuminator is a paper lantern. A wooden or bamboo frame with translucent Japanese paper stretched over it holds a candle inside. It was used as a mark or sign and also as a classical flashlight or torch.
A useful invention was its jabara-type version that collapses to provide best portability when it is not in use.
This portability is also an essential element of bellows.
